MP and AM meet residents on Biomass Plant

24th January 2007

Dr Hywel Francis MP and Dr Brian Gibbons AM invited local residents to their Constituency office recently to discuss concerns over the proposal for a biomass plant at Port Talbot docks.

Dr Brian Gibbons MP has already written to the Department of Trade and Industry highlighting his concerns in relation to visual impact along with environmental sustainability.

Dr Hywel Francis confirmed that he has arranged a meeting with Council Leader, Councillor Derek Vaughan, to discuss issues in relation to fire risk, health and transport.

In a joint statement Dr Francis and Dr Gibbons said:

'We met with local residents and we were impressed with the thoroughness of their research and the objective way they presented their evidence. We discussed critically important issues in relation to the scale of the proposal, fire hazards, health and environmental impact, transport problems and the disposal of any waste product such as ash.

We had requested Prenergy the company proposing the plant, to consult more widely with the local community by holding a further exhibition and we are glad that they have agreed to that request'.

The residents' meeting with Dr Francis MP and Dr Gibbons AM also discussed the petition circulated by Councillors Ted Latham and Collin Crowley who were present at the meeting.
