Press Release

Local Transport Bill

28th March 2008

Dr Hywel Francis MP for Aberavon has welcomed the Government's introduction of the new Local Transport Bill.

This Bill will give local authorities greater freedom and choice enabling them to exercise increased powers to deliver a more tailored transport system that is better suited to local needs.

Improved bus services will help tackle congestion, which is a growing problem in major towns and cities, estimated to grow by over 25% by 2015. This bill means that local transport can be planned, managed and delivered in a more sustainable manner, tackling such issues as congestion through wise use of existing roads and networks. This is good news for both the local economy and service users.

The Bill also enables the Government to create a National 'Bus Passenger Champion' thus giving passengers a 'new voice' and will give Traffic Commissioners new powers to take action where bus services are unreliable.

Dr Hywel Francis said

" As MP for Aberavon I fully support the Local Transport Bill, Overall, it will mean a more reliable and flexible local public transport network and help improve the quality of life for those people that rely on such services"
