Press Release

Care Homes Plea by MP

8th March 2010

Aberavon MP, Dr Hywel Francis has called for an extension to the consultation period regarding Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council’s plan for its Care Homes.

Dr Francis said,

“In the past two weeks I have visited the three Care Homes in my constituency, Morfa Afan in Sandfields, Min-Yr-Afon in Cwmafan and Arwelfa in Croeserw. In all the Homes I met with residents, families, and staff and union representatives. I was impressed by the affection and loyalty residents had for their Homes and the professionalism of the care staff as well as the admiration by the families for the high standards provided by Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council and all their staff.

There is understandable anxiety about the future. But the more everyone involved is engaged in discussions the more secure people feel that their views are being heard. I have encouraged everyone to write to the Local Authority to express their views and I know from experience that the Council is very much a listening Council.”

Dr Francis added,

“There has always been tremendous goodwill between residents, Care Home staff, the Local Authority and local communities and for that reason I believe that more time needs to be taken to arrive at the correct solution and that is why I have written to the Council Leader, Cllr. Alun Thomas with whom I am in constant touch urging an extension to the consultation period.”
