MP attacks Disability cuts in Aberavon

6th July 2011

Dr Hywel Francis, Labour MP for Aberavon has hit out at the Tory-led Government’s cuts which will harm disabled people in Aberavon.

Figures obtained by Labour revealed the numbers of DLA claimants of working age in Aberavon and the cuts they face as a result of the Government’s proposals to slash Disability Living Allowance expenditure by 20%.

Dr Francis said,

‘Calculations backed by figures from the House of Commons Library suggest the average reduction would be £14 per week for the 4,340 recipients claiming Disability Living Allowance in Aberavon a total cut of over £726.83 per year per person.’

‘Do the Tories have any idea how much suffering this will cause, with VAT, food, fuel and petrol prices sky high? The truth is that under this Government rich bankers are making money whilst the most vulnerable and needy are punished. Fuel poverty is a particular big issue for local residents.’
