MP backs Carers' Rights Day

29th November 2011

The Vice-President of Carers UK, Aberavon MP, Hywel Francis MP will be speaking in Port Talbot this Friday 2nd December on the need for greater financial support for carers and greater effort to get more carers to be aware of their rights to a carers’ assessment.

Dr Francis said,

‘I am delighted once again to speak in support for carers locally and throughout the country. There are over 10,000 carers who look after family members at a time when carers’ benefits are diminishing in value with the rising cost of food and fuel.

My Carers Equal Opportunities Act 2004 highlighted the importance of carers throughout the country being given the same opportunities as everyone else to ensure they have access to jobs, education, training and leisure.’

Dr Francis added,

‘We all need to work harder to ensure that carers get their rights – including their financial rights – and that is why I am pleased that Carers UK and Carers Wales have made ‘Money Matters’ the theme of this year’s Carers Rights Day.

Dr Francis concluded,

‘All local agencies should work harder to ensure that more carers are aware of their rights to a carers’ assessment to help them to lead decent fulfilled lives free from financial insecurity.
